How to travel with kids

We love families coming to stay, so for the last two weeks in June, from the start of the mid-year school holidays on 14 June 2019, Hout Bay Manor will be offering accommodation for your children at no charge. Kids just love being able to help themselves to the marsh mallows and liquorish allsorts that are readily available in big glass jars in all of our passageways before heading down the road to paint ceramics at Clay Cafe or heading to the Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront, only 20 minutes away from the hotel.

Here are our top five helpful hints for travelling with kids.

When you are travelling with kids everything will take longer than you expect so give yourself plenty of time.

If you are flying, be sure to arrive at the airport early to leave time for bathroom stops and unforeseen delays. Strategically book flight times to coincide with bedtimes where possible.
Don’t try to cram multiple outings into one day. Choose one main outing then keep your plans flexible and see how the day goes.

Make sure to pre-book your accommodation

Gone are the days of just arriving somewhere and then finding a place to stay. Book in advance. This way you can ensure that your accommodation is kid friendly.
Head straight to your lodgings to drop of your luggage and let your kids rest a little – particularly if it’s been a long trip.

Find out about child discounts when you pre-book your activities

You may be surprised at how many lodgings, attractions, restaurants and modes of public transport offer a discount for children. Even if this is not mentioned in the brochure, be sure to ask.
It is a good idea to pre-book and pay for as many of the major activities you wish to partake in, in advance – to save time and avoid any queues.

Take care of essential safety precautions

Keep track of your child. If you are travelling with another parent or adult share child watching responsibilities – one person can book the tickets, the other adult can watch the children.
Give your kids your contact information – and any other relevant names and numbers. Get creative – you could put the details on a note to keep in their pocket or even in their shoe. Just make sure that your child will be able to hang on to the information and know where to find it.
Take a range of basic medicines that your family may need with you.

Take along toys – either digital or soft and cuddly

More than explaining the holiday to your kids so they can get excited in anticipation of the trip, it will add a whole new dimension to their holiday to give your older children a basic camera so they can get involved and document their holiday to share with friends when they get home.
For younger kids, it is wise not to forget their favourite stuffed toy – the one they can’t sleep with out.
